Kyrgyzstan Travel Guide 2027: What to Know, Best Places, Routes & Emergency Numbers

Kyrgyzstan is suddenly on everyone's list for 2027, and the rules for visiting changed in 2026. We wrote this guide as the local team in Bishkek: what to know before booking, the places worth your time, routes from 5 to 14 days and the numbers to call if something goes wrong. Save it offline, because mobile signal disappears fast in the mountains.

Why Kyrgyzstan is the place to go in 2027

Kyrgyzstan tops Skyscanner's list of trending destinations for 2027: return-flight searches for Bishkek from the UK rose 501% year on year, the biggest jump on the list (Time Out, Falstaff). Skyscanner credits the BBC's Race Across the World and how close Bishkek sits to mountain trails. Searches from Australia grew even faster.

The interest is earned. More than 90% of the country is mountains, you can sleep in a shepherd's yurt at 3,000 m two days after landing, and a full week with a driver and guide still costs less than a few nights in the Alps.

What's new for travellers in 2027

Five changes matter most. The first two can ruin a trip if you miss them.

ChangeSinceWhat it means for you
Visa-free stay cut to 30 days in any 60 for 55 countries (US, UK, all EU, Canada, Australia, NZ, Japan, Korea and more)1 January 2026Plan trips of up to 30 days or apply for an e-visa. Leaving and coming back does not reset the clock (US Embassy, VisasNews)
Kazakhstan's QazETA electronic travel authorization becomes mandatory1 July 2027Flying into Almaty and driving to Kyrgyzstan? Get the free QazETA before you fly, or you may be refused entry to Kazakhstan (VisasNews)
All Kyrgyz airlines removed from the EU Air Safety List after 20 yearsJune 2026Opens the door to direct flights between Kyrgyzstan and Europe, with Germany expected first (Times of Central Asia)
More regional flights to Issyk-Kul (Tamchy airport), including seasonal Tashkent and Astana routesSummer 2026Lake holidays without the 4-hour drive from Bishkek (Qazinform)
Stricter drone rules: permission needed beyond basic consumer use, extra limits near protected sitesDraft rules, April 2026Fly a small drone only in open countryside, never near borders, airports or military sites, and ask your guide first (24.kg)

What has not changed yet is the long-discussed single Central Asian tourist visa. Kyrgyzstan revived the plan in 2026, but there is no launch date, price or portal (VisasNews). Plan each country's entry separately.

Visa, entry rules and border permits

With a Western passport and a stay under 30 days, you need nothing but a passport valid for the trip. Under Cabinet Resolution No. 855, in force since 31 December 2025, the visa-free stay depends on nationality (VisasNews):

PassportVisa-free stay
55 countries including the USA, UK, all EU, Switzerland, Norway, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Japan, South Korea, Singapore, Brazil, Mexico and Israel30 days within any 60-day period
Saudi Arabia, UAE, Qatar, Kuwait, Oman, Bahrain180 days within 360
Turkey, Serbia, Ukraine, Mongolia90 days within 180
Russia, Kazakhstan, Armenia, Belarus (EAEU)90 days within 180
Uzbekistan60 days within 180
Everyone elseE-visa through the official portal evisa.e-gov.kg

Overstaying is costly: you pay a fine and need an exit visa, which cannot be sorted out at the airport (US Embassy). Staying longer than 30 days? Apply for an e-visa before you arrive and register your stay within 5 days, which your host or hotel helps with. Use only the official portal, because look-alike sites charge extra for the same e-visa. And if you arrive through Almaty after 1 July 2027, add the free QazETA to your checklist.

Border zone permits

Some of the most spectacular places lie in the border zone, up to roughly 50 km from the borders with China and Tajikistan. You need a permit from the State Border Service, and guards check it with your passport at checkpoints. Order it at least 7 to 10 working days ahead; it is valid for about a month. Tour operators, us included, arrange it from a passport scan.

RegionPlaces that need a permit
Issyk-Kul (east)Enylchek (Inylchek) glacier and ghost town, Merzbacher Lake, Khan Tengri base camp, Sary-Jaz valley, Karkyra, Ak-Shyirak
NarynKel-Suu (Kol-Suu) lake, Ak-Sai valley, Chatyr-Kul lake, Torugart pass
Osh and AlayLenin Peak base camp (Achik-Tash), Tulpar-Kul lake
ChuiParts of the Chon-Kemin valley
BatkenSouthern valleys (separate permit)

Popular places that do not need a permit: Song-Kul, Ala-Archa, Karakol and its valleys (Altyn-Arashan, Ala-Kul, Jeti-Oguz), Tash Rabat, Sary-Chelek, Arslanbob and the whole Issyk-Kul shoreline.

Getting there and getting around

Most visitors fly into Bishkek's Manas airport through Istanbul, Dubai, Almaty or Tashkent. Osh is the gateway to the south and the Pamir Highway. For connections and arrival logistics, see our guide to travelling from abroad.

RouteHowNotes
Almaty → BishkekShared taxi, bus or private transfer, about 4 h including the borderThe cheapest long-haul fares often land in Almaty. Check QazETA from July 2027
Manas airport → Bishkek centreYandex Go taxi or a pre-booked transfer, 30 to 40 minAvoid unofficial drivers in the arrivals hall
Bishkek → Issyk-KulShared taxi or minibus from the Western bus station, or the summer train to BalykchyThe train runs June to mid-September through the scenic Boom gorge
Bishkek → KarakolMinibus (7 to 8 h) or a private car with driver (6 to 7 h)Combine with south-shore stops: Skazka, Barskoon, Jeti-Oguz
Bishkek → OshDomestic flight (1 h) or a 10 to 12 h drive over two passesThe drive is spectacular, the flight saves a day
Song-Kul, Kel-Suu, Tash Rabat4x4 with driverGravel roads, river crossings, no public transport

Our advice: in cities use Yandex Go, and between regions hire a car with a local driver. Self-drive rentals exist, but mountain roads, livestock and night driving cause most accidents involving visitors.

Money, SIM cards and what things cost

Carry cash in som outside the cities. Cards work in hotels and restaurants in Bishkek, Osh, Karakol and Cholpon-Ata, while yurt camps, guesthouses, bazaars and shared taxis take cash only.

Cash. Bring clean USD or EUR notes and change them at banks or licensed exchange offices in Bishkek, where rates are fair and commission is usually zero. ATMs are common in towns and rare in villages.

SIM card. Buy a local SIM (Beeline, MegaCom or O!) at the airport or in a branch with your passport; a month of data costs a few dollars, and an eSIM works too. Coverage is good on main roads and around Issyk-Kul, patchy or absent at Song-Kul, Ala-Kul and in the high valleys.

Offline maps. Download Maps.me or Organic Maps, plus Google Maps offline areas, before you leave Bishkek.

ItemTypical 2026 price (approximate)

The 16 most popular places in Kyrgyzstan

With one week, choose Issyk-Kul, Karakol and Song-Kul. With two, add Naryn, Tash Rabat and either Kel-Suu or the south.

Bishkek and the north

1. Bishkek. A green Soviet-era capital with snow peaks at the end of its avenues. Walk Ala-Too Square, the Osh Bazaar and Panfilov Park, and eat at a Kyrgyz or Uzbek chaikhana. One day is enough, and our city tour packs it into a morning and an afternoon.

2. Ala-Archa National Park. The easiest mountains in the country, 40 km south of Bishkek. Private petrol cars no longer drive in; park buses take you to the trailheads. The easy walk is the waterfall trail (3 to 4 h return), the hard one is the climb to the Ratsek hut at 3,350 m with glacier views. We run it as a day hike at your pace.

3. Burana Tower. An 11th-century minaret near Tokmok, a stop on the road to Issyk-Kul, with a field of balbal stone figures. An hour is enough, or make it a day trip with Bishkek.

4. Chon-Kemin valley. A quiet green valley with guesthouses, horse riding and rafting, 2.5 h from Bishkek. Part of the upper valley is in the border zone.

5. Issyk-Kul north shore (Cholpon-Ata). Beaches, resorts and the open-air petroglyph museum. Busy in July and August.

6. Issyk-Kul south shore. Wilder and quieter: yurt camps on the beach at Bokonbaevo and Tamga, eagle-hunting demonstrations and the Barskoon waterfalls.

7. Skazka (Fairy Tale) Canyon. Red and orange sandstone ridges a short drive from the lake near Tosor. Best in the late afternoon light; there is a small cash entry fee.

8. Jeti-Oguz (Seven Bulls). Red cliffs shaped like seven bulls and the Broken Heart rock, 25 km from Karakol. Continue to the Valley of Flowers for a day hike.

9. Karakol. The trekking capital: the wooden Holy Trinity cathedral, the Dungan mosque built without nails, the Sunday animal market and ashlyan-fu noodles.

10. Altyn-Arashan and Ala-Kul. Hot springs in a pine valley, then a 3,900 m pass to a turquoise glacier lake. It is the classic 3 to 4 day trek of Kyrgyzstan; read our full Ala-Kul trek guide.

11. Song-Kul lake. A high-pasture lake at about 3,000 m where shepherd families live in yurts from June to September. Ride a horse, drink kymyz, watch the stars. Our yurt etiquette guide tells you how to be a good guest, and the 3-day horse trek is the classic way in.

12. Kochkor. A village base for Song-Kul and the home of shyrdak felt carpets, where you can watch a felt-making workshop. Community tourism started here (how it helps families).

14. Kel-Suu (Kol-Suu) lake. A narrow lake between sheer cliffs near the Chinese border. It needs a 4x4, a border permit and a boat or a walk. Remote and unforgettable; our Kel-Suu Lake Express does it in 4 days.

The south

15. Osh and Sulaiman-Too. One of Central Asia's oldest cities, with the UNESCO-listed sacred mountain and one of the biggest bazaars in the region. The start of the Pamir Highway and the road to Lenin Peak.

16. Arslanbob and Sary-Chelek. Arslanbob has the world's largest walnut forest and waterfalls; Sary-Chelek is a deep blue lake in a biosphere reserve. Both work as a 3 to 4 day add-on from Osh or Bishkek.

Best Kyrgyzstan routes for 2027: 5 to 14 days

All four routes start and end in Bishkek, fit inside the 30-day visa-free stay and run best from mid-June to mid-September. Driving times assume a private car. Going without one? Safety, etiquette and what to pack

Kyrgyzstan is a low-crime country for visitors; the real risks are roads, altitude and weather. Our mountain safety guide goes deeper.

Roads. Avoid driving after dark, when livestock, unlit trucks and potholes are hard to see, and wear seat belts.

Altitude. Song-Kul, Tash Rabat and Ala-Kul are at 3,000 to 3,900 m. Climb slowly, drink water, and go down if a headache gets worse.

Weather. Snow can fall on the passes even in July. Never trek alone, and tell your guesthouse your route and when you plan to be back.

Water. Drink bottled or boiled water, because streams below the pastures carry livestock bacteria.

Police checks. Carry your passport, or a copy with the original close by. Fines are paid at a bank or against a receipt, never in cash on the spot.

Insurance. Buy travel insurance that covers trekking up to 4,000 m and helicopter evacuation.

Etiquette in short: take off your shoes in yurts and homes, accept tea with your right hand, ask before photographing people, and dress modestly at mosques and in the south. Full details are in our yurt culture guide.

Emergency numbers and where to get help

In any emergency dial 112. It is the unified number run by the Ministry of Emergency Situations and it also handles mountain rescue (UK FCDO, MChS). Operators speak Kyrgyz and Russian and English is limited, so ask your host or guide to call with you. Save these numbers and write them on paper too.

In the summer season the Interior Ministry puts English-speaking tourist police on duty in Bishkek, Osh and the Issyk-Kul region; one recent season counted 146 such officers (24.kg).

What to do if…

  1. Someone is hurt in the mountains. Call 112 and give your location (share GPS coordinates from Maps.me), stay together and keep the injured person warm. With no signal, send one person to the nearest yurt or ranger post.
  2. Your passport is lost or stolen. Report it at the nearest police station (102) and get a written report, then contact your embassy for an emergency travel document.
  3. You are about to overstay. Go to the State Registration Service in Bishkek before your 30 days end; leaving late means a fine and an exit visa.
  4. You feel unwell at altitude. Go down at least 500 m. Karakol, Naryn and Osh have regional hospitals, and serious cases go to Bishkek.
