Ak-Say Canyons & Barskoon Falls - Day Trip

A full day on the quieter south shore of Issyk-Kul. We walk the red Ak-Say Canyons, where the lake and the snowy ridges share one view. Then we hike through forest to the Barskoon waterfalls at a pace you choose. Lunch is in a yurt by the shore or by the river. It suits travellers who want more than the busy north shore.

Day-by-day itinerary

Tap any day to expand. Every itinerary can be tailored to your dates, pace and fitness.

We pick you up from your hotel in Bishkek early in the morning. The road runs through valleys and mountains to the south shore of Issyk-Kul. On the way we stop at a small local place for kattama with sour cream and tea from a samovar. A simple breakfast is possible too.

First comes the Ak-Say Canyons, a maze of red rock that few visitors reach. People often compare it to Mars. From the viewpoints you see the red canyon, the blue lake and the snowy peaks together. There is time for short walks and photos.

Lunch is your call: a yurt on the shore of Issyk-Kul or a picnic by the river. Then we head into Barskoon Gorge. The walk can be an easy 30 minutes or a longer forest hike, and your guide sets the pace with you. At the end you reach the waterfalls, cold air and water falling between cliffs and trees.

If you like, we can add an eagle hunting demonstration in Bokonbayevo in the evening as a paid extra. Then we drive back to Bishkek and drop you at your hotel late in the evening, around 10 to 11 pm.
