A night in a yurt is the moment most travellers fall in love with Kyrgyzstan. It's not a hotel gimmick here, it's a living home that has sheltered nomad families on these pastures for centuries.

## More than a tent

The Kyrgyz **boz üy** is a feat of nomadic engineering: a round lattice frame, a felt cover, and a wooden crown, the tündük, so important it sits at the centre of the national flag.

## What a night is really like

Expect comfort that's simple and rich at the same time. You'll sleep on thick felt mattresses under warm blankets, often with a wood stove. Facilities are basic, usually a shared outdoor toilet and limited signal. That disconnection is the point.

- Meals are home-cooked and generous
- You may be offered kymyz (fermented mare's milk)
- Mornings start with the sounds of animals

> "A guest brings happiness," goes the Kyrgyz saying. Hospitality isn't a service here, it's an honour.

## Simple etiquette to be a great guest

- Accept food and tea when offered, even just a little
- Take bread seriously, don't waste it or place it upside down
- Use your right hand to give and receive
- Ask before photographing people
- Dress modestly

> **A small gesture** Bringing a little gift, sweets for the kids, or tea, is a lovely way to say thank you.

## Sleep in one, not just read about it
Every Song-Kul trip stays with real herder families.
